Hadlee slams NZC for overstay of players in IPL

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) chief selector Richard Hadlee has criticised the board's decision to allow five Kiwi players to extend their stay in India for Indian Premier League (IPL) and arrive late for their tour to England.
The NZC gave permission to Daniel Vettori, Brendon McCullum, Jacob Oram, Ross Taylor and Kyle Mills to miss the first two tour games in England as they were playing in the IPL.
'I made my thoughts well known to the NZC. I felt the tour starts the day the players assemble. Though I accept the compromise with the players, yet it did not look good arriving in the country without the captain and vice-captain,' Hadlee was quoted as saying in 'The Times'.
'International players have to be available for their countries,' said the former Kiwi fast bowler, whose tenure as the selection committee manager ends in July.
Hadlee said he is not opposed to the IPL but players should not compromise on the national duty.
'You cannot blame the players for wanting to be in the IPL. Look, the money is very attractive for not a lot of work and effort, but the global game has to survive and not be compromised,' Hadlee said.
'There needs to be a total understanding that once international commitments are there, either you are a part of it or not,' he said.
The England tour is of high significance for New Zealand after they lost the home series against them in March. The Kiwis have not tasted success in England for last nine years.
