Australian politician suggests force against Myanmar leaders
Europe News.Net Friday 16th May, 2008
An Australian opposition party member has suggested a regime change in Myanmar if the generals continue to let the humanitarian crisis escalate.
Tony Abbott, a member of Australia's Liberal party, told an interviewer on the ABC television network that it could be appropriate to use force in the circumstances.
Mr Abbott said there could be a humanitarian obligation to take stronger action if the situation becomes more extreme.
But, he said, the public would need to understand the “dire” steps if force were to be used.
Myanmar's ruling military junta has been criticised internationally for failing to provide aid for people displaced by Cyclone Nargis.
US legislators have called on President George Bush to consider intervention, and have asked him to strongly consider backing efforts by France, Britain, Germany, Denmark and other nations to force their way into the devastated Irrawaddy Delta region to distribute aid to the needy.

NO FORCES
We cannot just barge into any country because we do not like what is happening there . It is their country as Australia is ours and we have to respect that as much as we do not like it . We can only watch and wait to help , we cannot keep sending aid that is stolen by the military , and make them richer than they are.The people on the ground do not get the benefit. This is a waiting game there is nothing else to be done.

Ridiculous !
preparing and getting a piece of real estate in Irrawaddy to establish NGOs help the needy -distribution centres ?..has he taken too much beer before the ABC interview ?.. asking Bush to open a new front when he can hardly clean up the existing ones?..the French ? i doubt they have forgotten fully Dien Bien Phu ! even the memory brings goose pimples!Germans and Danes ? they hardly know Burma let alone Myanmar..and the British ?..they havenot even got over their “losses” here and their River Kwai experience..so that ofcourse leaves the Aussies themselves..but they couldnot even impress on the little island of East Timor so close to home recently let alone facing a more hardened lot thousands of miles away requiring heightened logistics..and in the last analysis the populace suffer more due to revenge atrocities by the Junta!..and will China allow untrustworhy Westerners in its rear ?..please donot look at us.. we also have numerous problems to solve ..why not do the Asean way and at least get there half way rather than confrontational..have another beer mate ..ABC may call you again..!

Disgusted
Just do fighter escorted mass airdrops. Obvious isn’t it? We have a humanitarian obligation to help the oppressed and neglected. How dare we stand by (like we are doing with MUGabe!) No more talkfests. People are dying as you read!

what about t.he victims
this is a natural disaster, everyone should be digging into it and ensure that people are saved from the follow on of not receiving water and food. If there is a government that is not willing to give these people any chance of of surviving than I do support military intervention...this is no “smoking gun” this is helping people who have been struck by disaster....nothing of their own doing.
Shame on you, who want to deny these poor people the possibility of living!!!

another Iraq?
these kinds of ideas coming straight from the ex-government party of former John Howard, have led to Australia facing enemies it never had. The unilateral invasion of Iraq has created so much anger and hostility that Australia is now facing terrorist threats it didn’t know before. Meddling in other, sovereign nation’s affairs is not acceptable under international law. Yesterday Iraq, today Burma and tomorrow?

who is really crazy 05-17-08, 12:48 AM |
brain washed
Crack pot dragging china into this discussion is absurd. Mr. Abbot got it right. The condition in Burma is extremely bad now and countless Burmese villagers and peasants will die if the Junta succeed in preventing aid from reaching them. Is this what we want? The outside world have to make sure this doesn’t happen in Burma. The Chinese not only let foreign aid into China, they sent troops in to help.

sonless big mouth
The Junta is committing mass genocide without lifting a finger. The only Junta energy directed is to stop aid from reaching the suffering masses and let them perish. We are standing still while this catastrophy is unfolding before our eyes.
