Garbine Muguruza of Spain spoiled fellow former No. 1 Kim Clijsters' return to the WTA Tour with a 6-2, 7-6 (6) win in the first round of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships on Monday.
A bit rusty in her first match since 2012, the 36-year-old Clijsters double-faulted 10 times and won only 57.6 percent of the points on her first serve. Muguruza, the No. 9 seed, converted four of 15 break points and fired eight aces in the 97-minute match.
Clijsters, a four-time Grand Slam champion and a 2017 International Tennis Hall of Fame inductee, gave birth to her second and third children during her long hiatus.
Muguruza will face Ukraine's Dayana Yastremska or Russian qualifier Veronika Kudermetova in the second round.
In other action Monday, Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic outlasted Amanda Anisimova 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-4, Belgium's Elise Mertens defeated China's Qiang Wang 6-3, 6-0, Tunisia's Ons Jabeur eliminated Alison Riske 7-6 (3), 1-6, 6-3, and Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic ousted Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova 6-3, 6-2.
