Top-seeded Petra Martic of Croatia overcame a slow start to beat Russia's Liudmila Samsonova 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 on Thursday and advance to the quarterfinals of the Palermo (Italy) Ladies Open.

All three seeded players in action advanced, as No. 4 Anett Kontaveit of Estonia rallied past Germany's Laura Siegemund 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, and No. 7 Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine dispatched France's Oceane Dodin 6-2, 6-4. In the day's other match, Italy's Camila Giorgi recovered to beat Slovenian teen Kaja Juvan 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Martic needed 2 hours, 25 minutes to clinch victory, with the first set taking nearly an hour. She fought off eight set points -- including six while trailing 5-4 -- before dropping the ninth.

Martic bounced right back, breaking Samsonova's serve in the first game of the second set and again to take a 5-4 lead and serve for the set. In the third, she broke twice and quickly closed it out.

Siegemund broke Kontaveit's service three times in the opening set, including the first and last games, but the Estonian responded with five breaks of her own over the final two sets. Both players struggled with their serves, combining for 12 double faults (seven by Siegemund).

Yastremska, 20, handled Dodin in just 78 minutes, racking up 11 aces while her opponent double-faulted nine times.
