No. 4 seed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus avoided an early exit at the Internationaux de Strasbourg on Wednesday with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory against Russia's Anna Blinkova.
Sabalenka reached her first quarterfinal since before the WTA Tour's five-month COVID-19 hiatus. She will face the Czech Republic's Katerina Siniakova, a 6-2, 6-4 upset winner against No. 7 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia.
Unseeded Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia was leading 2-6, 6-4, 4-2 when No. 3 seed Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands was forced to retire with an injury.
"I was a set and 4-2 down and I'm glad I fought to the end," Ostapenko said. "I couldn't find my game and I think I was rushing a little bit. Then in the second set, I started to play better, a bit smarter, not go for every shot. ... And I think that worked pretty well."
Ostapenko's quarterfinal opponent will be Japan's Nao Hibino, who advanced with a 7-5, 6-3 win against Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan.
