Russian qualifier Veronika Kudermetova smacked 41 winners on Thursday to stun second-seeded Karolina Pliskova 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals of the JT Banka Ostrava Open in the Czech Republic.
The 23-year-old Kudermetova overcame 31 unforced errors while advancing to set up a battle with recent U.S. Open semifinalist Jennifer Brady. The American Brady reached the quarters by knocking off Russia's Daria Kasatkina 7-5, 6-2.
Pliskova had just 21 winners against 30 unforced errors while playing in her home country. Meanwhile, Kudermetova was beaming afterward, saying "This is the second time we've played this year and I beat her twice, so I think it was a good match from me."
Third-seeded Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus also advanced as she recorded 30 winners while outlasting American Coco Gauff 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (2). "She's great," the 22-year-old Sabalenka said of Gauff. "She's 16 and she's playing on this level -- I would like to be on this level when I was 16."
In other matches, seventh-seeded Elise Mertens of Belgium produced a 6-4, 6-2 win over Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic, and Tunisia's Ons Jabeur posted a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko.
